4 Considerations to Make Before Your Next Boat Purchase

Published

New year, new boat?

Are you starting 2023 off with a bang by committing to purchasing a new boat this spring?

So exciting! Time on the lake can be relaxing, action packed, or somewhere in between! You can make it whatever you want. At Buxton Marine, located in Lewisville, Texas, we are a community full of boating enthusiasts who love to spend time out on the water.

Wondering where to start? Look no further! Here are 4 things you should take into consideration as you contemplate your next boat purchase:

1.     How Do I Plan to Use the Boat?

First, consider what your primary goal is for boating? Do you want to enjoy time with your family leisurely on the lake? Maybe you, or a family member, are really into watersports? Do you love to fish? The answers to these questions will help to determine what type, make, and model of boat is best going to fit your specific needs. Just as you would when making any large purchase, make a list of requirements you would need to accomplish your boating goals.

2.     How Often Will I Use the Boat?

Next, think about the frequency in which your boat would be used. Do you live nearby and can take it out often, even in the evenings? Or do you live further from a lake and boating would be more sporadic? This all comes into play when considering storage options, price range, etc. If you are using it frequently then storing the boat offside becomes a hindrance so you may want to consider a boat slip instead. Frequency all helps to determine what level of investment makes sense for you as you look to purchase.

3.     What is My Total Boating Budget?

You will need to consider more than just how much you are willing to spend on the price of the boat. You will need to think about all costs associated with boat ownership: storage fees, insurance, trailer costs, regular maintenance, fuel, and accessories. Make sure you aren’t going into this purchase blind to all the additional costs!

4.     New or Used?

Another thing to consider when contemplating a boat purchase is whether or not you desire to purchase new or used. There are of course pros and cons to both. A new boat will be pristine, have no surprise maintenance issues, etc. But it comes with a higher price tag. A used boat could still look great, come with a few miles, but also come in a price range that is easier on your budget.
